Wireless Network

Just get this tiny device, the manufacturer called this a "Router + Wireless Access Point".
ASUS is clever, this device make use a bunch of Open Source software that distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL) (so that they can pay less effort to make this device), that's why, you can find the source code of the firmware of this device on their supporting pages.
Actually, I would prefer to treat it as a tiny Linux Box, it runs Linux, make use of netfilter, zebra, rp-pppoe, etc. I wonder if there any method to "hack" into it and add more features to it ;P

Mac World Expo 2005 at San Francisco

Apple has announced a bunch of new products, Mac Mini, iPod Shuffle, iWork05, iLife05, also demostrated a lot of new features in the upcoming OS X Tiger.
I have spent an hour to watch the Keynote Webcast (which is available on Apple's homepage), Tiger looks amazing. Not only the wonderful interface of OS X, but those ... fanncy effects. As a software engineer, it's not hard to know that Apple has spent a lot of time studying in this area.

I would happy to pay for Tiger, but not M$ Windows.

P.S. Watching the Keynote presented by Steve Jobs is certainly more interesting than listening to Tung's Policy Address, as the former one is presenting some innovative and REAL stuff, while the later one just like "water blowing". (do you guys still remember 85,000, cyberport) ;P

Since estimations are so faulty, there is little reason to be concerned when software projects do not meet estimated targets.

Since estimates are so faulty, there is little reason to be concerned when software projects do not meet estimated targets. But everyone is concerned anyway.

... I ask the attendees to work on a small task. I deliberately give them too much to do and not enough time to do it. My expectation is that the attendees will try to do the whole job, do it correctly, and therefore will produce an unfinished product because they run out of time. Not so. To a person, these attendees scramble mightily to achieve my impossible schedule. They produce sketchy and shoddy products that appear to be complete but cannot possibly work.

What does that tell me? That, in our culture today, people are trying so hard to achieve (impossible) schedules that they are willing to sacrifice completeness and quality in getting there. That there has been a successful conditioning process, one that has resulted in people doing the wrong things for the wrong reasons. And finally, and most disturbingly, that it will be very difficult to turn all of this around.

Something about Mac =P

... most of the PC games failed to develop on the Mac specifically because the demographics of the two markets are so different. Those developers, for example, who focused on replacing the player's imagination or intelligence with interactive graphics simply found no market among Mac buyers -- most of whom are older and/or better educated than the people to whom those products sell...
